forms is self-described as “the missing link between R&B and musique concrète”, and while it perhaps isn’t that experimental, it’s still fascinating work. The lyrics by alt-R&B specialist butaji are thick with introspection, delivered in his typically impassioned and resonant manner. Trackmaker Yusaku Arai’s music, meanwhile, is patient, pretty and gently momentous. forms, the duo’s debut full-length collaboration as butasaku, offers a masterful manipulation of space and emotion; an extreme of lush, measured R&B.
