Even if one were to never properly understand the lyrics of ANOCHI [THERE], it would still be clear this this is a record of remarkable political might; that it wills its listeners into mass movement and cacophonous solidarity. Tokyo experimental rockers Gezan and Million Wish Collective (a group of musicians that includes members of OLAibi and the hatch) call to arms with triumphant bagpipes, hypnotic throat-singing, enraptured crowd singalongs and calmly focused spoken word. Gezan frontman Mahito The People acts a sort of millenarian prophet over engulfing washes of post-hardcore, noise rock and squealing jazz, yet the overall mood is celebratory and hopeful, too. ANOCHI is urgent, spiritual and entrancing.
