On * side_effects+.* fluorescent pop duo Illiomote try their hand at several kinds of pop rock, from stadium-ready anthems to la-la-la-ing balladry, each track as well-written and dotted with sonic surprises as the next – but it’s the record’s pieces of purer pop that really, truly have the most impact. Particularly on the release’s first half, YOCO and MAIYA’s third EP delivers several fabulously sheening, beat-driven, deftly-grooved works which, when combined with Illiomote’s taste for agile mood shifts and a tight production style, amount to seriously vibrant and fresh pop tunes.
