It’s a tribute to Shinichi Osawa’s immense technical skills that while each of his Mondo Grosso records retains a certain dance-influenced backbone, he’s always thrived within contemporary sounds and trends. Osawa keeps up with the kids again on Big World, a work that sees him combine his usual big beat electronics with the likes of CHAI, Dongurizu, Yoshie Nakano and ermhoi. And Osawa’s collaborators aren’t limited to the currently-hyped. Original Love’s Takao Tajima pops up on “ILLUSORY REFLECTION”, while album highlight “IN THIS WORLD” features both a Ryuichi Sakamoto piano line and a reunion with “Labyrinth”’s Hikari Mitsushima. Sure, not every feature on Big World is perfect, but the highlights are as you’d expect of Osawa – boldly, inescapably brilliant.
