Self-styled as being at a crossroads between music, literature and art, okkaaa’s Voyage, as its title suggests, can be heard as a kind of documentary (there are even visual companion pieces for the work, which can be viewed here). okkaaa embraces elements of soul, R&B and hip hop, all used as vehicles for his own introspection. But lyricism aside, Voyage is tasteful and elegant, often producing moments of real and lasting beauty. A clear highlight is the nearly-eight-minute centrepiece “Omoide shite” [Remember / Recall], a gorgeous, multi-phased work of dreamy pop. If you haven’t the patience for all of Voyage, it’s worth making time for “Omoide shite”.
