Nemurenu yoru no kimi no tame [For You On Sleepless Nights], the debut EP of Sapporo-based artist UTERO, is most impressive for just how masterfully it manages its experimental edges. Inherently accessible, UTERO’s work is occasionally decorated with IDM-esque fluttering bass beats, smatterings of digital scuzz and ethereally textured synths. That UTERO also performs as Rin Yumegiwa (of alternative pop group yumegiwa last girl) makes some sense: there’s plenty of pop sensibility in the forthright melodies of Nemurenu yoru – giving the record an immediacy that holds together its loose structures and sparse soundscapes.
