Plunge into Yank!’s Stupa and find yourself in a subdued but exact musical landscape, as eerie and still as it is intoxicating. The band’s slow-moving synths, steadily funking grooves and tightly-controlled performances aren’t far from the measured sumptuousness of Shohei Takagi’s 2020 album Triptych, but also the works of Shintaro Sakamoto, Homeshake and Khruangbin (all of which Yank! has listed as influences). While it’s true that this kind of sound has been done quite thoroughly – and quite well – by plenty of artists before Yank!, Stupa is executed well enough to warrant its own attention.
